Program Fee, Tuition, and Other Costs

Program Fee
The fee for the program will vary depending on the number of students that ultimately enroll in the program. Because of substantial fixed costs that do not vary with the number of students in the program group, the fewer the number of program participants, the higher the program fee required to cover costs. Final enrollment in the program should be clear by mid February 2008.

Tuition: Amounts and Methods of Payment
Tuition for Georgia Tech overseas programs is seperate from and in addition to the program fee. It must be paid directly to the Bursar.

Amount of tuition will vary between $163 and $188 per credit hour depending on the year the student matriculated at Georgia Tech. The East Asia Program is made up of two courses totaling 9 credit hours. At $163 per credit hour, tuition would be $1,467. Graduate student tuition for Summer 2008 will be $221 per credit hour, or $1,989 for the program. Out-of-state (non-Georgia resident) students will pay a simple $250 extra.

The Bursar is the keeper of tuition rates. Please direct any questions in this regard directly to the Bursar.

Questions may be directed to: bursar.ask@business.gatech.edu.
A customer service representative is available at: 404-894-4618.

Tuition payments and Program Fee payments are made via the same on-line system at www.bursar.gatech.edu/tuiandfee.php. Students may and should pay their tuition shortly after they register for the two courses making up the East Asia Program. The final date for payment og tuition for overseas prgrams is 11 May 2008. Note, however, the East Asia Program will already be in Asia by that point, so students should pay tuition well prior to that point. The tuition payment schedule should be available to students very shortly (withing minutes, I'm told) after they register for the courses.

Total Program Costs
The program fee does not cover either Georgia Tech tuition or trans-Pacific air fare between Atlanta and East Asia. These costs must also be born by the student.

Roundtrip Atlanta-East Asia air fare will cost about $1,200 -- depending on the cost of air fares available in February 2008.

The student should also take another $1,000 to $1,500 dollars to cover incidental expenses. The program will cover many but not all meals. Students will also travel about town on their own on evenings and on free days. Some students are frugal, others less so. During the 2007 cycle of the program, some students got by on $500, others required $1,000 for individual meals, transportation, and souveniers.

Thus, assuming 15 students and a Program fee of $4,118, and estimating $1,200 for trans-Pacific air fare, $1,500 for Georgia Tech tuition, and $1,500 pocket money, the total program cost to a student would be about $8,318.

This is admittedly not a small amount. Remember, however, that this program includes travel in and between five East Asia regions -- South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong -- with very high costs. The program is a travel-packed and activity-packed 8 weeks that will familiarize students with the development of the most dynamic region of the global economy. The program offers a really rather cheap way of doing that.

Some financial aid is available and administered by the Office of International Education at Georgia Tech. The East Asia Program itself does not have or extend financial aid.
