Bridges to the Georgia Tech International Plan

The Georgia Tech “International Plan” requires students to complete at least two terms totaling 26 weeks of international experience. This must be done in no more than two terms (i.e. a summer and a semester, or two semesters). Students may not combine more than 2 programs to meet the 26 week requirement. In order to extend students time in East Asia to 12 weeks, several “bridges” have been arranged allowing interested students to remain an additional 4 weeks (basically the month of July) in either Seoul or Taipei. A Georgia Tech student would then need to find another 14-week (semester) long overseas program to satisfy requirements for the Georgia Tech “International Plan.”
The cost of these additional “Bridge” stays will be born by the student. Students interested in a “Bridge” to the Tech international plan should will need to purchase air passage between Hong Kong and either Taipei or Seoul, and then Atlanta.
For both of the Independent Study options listed below (in Seoul and in Taipei), students will need to register via the regular Georgia Tech system for a 3 credit hour independent study course during the 2008 summer term --- in addition to the two courses constituting the regular East Asia program. They will also need to pay Georgia Tech tuition for this additional course.

Here are three “Bridges”:

Bridge I: Taipei, Taiwan Bridge: Independent Study Option:
The Student will be a “visiting student” at National Chengchi University (NCCU) campus in a southern suburb of Taipei during a four-week post-East Asia Program period in July 2008. Participating students would reside on the NCCU campus and research and write a paper on a topic related to East Asian development, discussed and agreed-to beforehand by the student and Program Director Garver. Efforts will be made by NCCU to pair the visiting student with a NCCU student of similar age and general interest in the topic being studied.
The costs of this arrangement are:
Dorm: NT$ 250 (US$8.33) per day (28 days), plus NT$2,000 (US$67) deposit
Library and internet access fee: NT$3,000 (US$100)
Admission Fee: NT$3,000 (US$100)
Total: US$500.24

Bridges II and III: Seoul, Korea.
There are two possibilities with Sogang University in south-central Seoul: 1) a 4-week independent study on a topic discussed and agreed-to beforehand by the student and Program Director Garver, and 2) participation in a 6-week Korean Studies Summer School Program offered regularly by Sogang University.
II Seoul, Korea Bridge: Independent Study Option
Independent-study option, the student will live on the Sogang University campus and use Sogang University facilities to research and write a paper on a topic related to East Asian development. The topic of that paper will be discussed and agreed-to beforehand by the student and Program Director Garver. If the student desires, during the Fall 2008 semester, the student can register for a 3-credit hour independent study with Dr. Garver and turn that paper into a potentially publishable article. As of August 2007, the cost of this option is still under discussion.

III Seoul, Korea Bridge
Regarding the second, Sogang University Korean Studies Summer School option, students will enroll in Sogang’s regular Special Summer School and take several 3-credit hour courses in Korean Politics, History, or Economics.
Students will share a double-occupancy dorm room with a Korean student. There is also a field trip to other regions of Korea.
The cost of the program is:
To Sogang:
Registration / application fee: US$ 70
Dormitory: US$ 660
Fee for cultural field work: US$ 200
3-day cultural field trip: US$ 300

To Georgia Tech:
Tuition for credit courses: about US$ 1,467 (for 9 credit hours)
